Could Your Small Equine Business Fail?
For many of us what we want out of our small equine business is rather simple. We want to support ourselves and our families on a flexible schedule, where we set the hours, where we have some control over what we are doing and allows us more time to be outside riding. I know that is a large part of the reason why I started Horse & Hound Marketing.
If you Google the phrase, “Why do small businesses fail?” you will instantly receive about 2,030,000 results. This question is often searched, written about, and discussed, and it is terrifying to many entrepreneurs. We risk a lot when we put all our energy, savings, and passion into starting our own businesses. They just can’t fail, but all too often they do. The U.S. Small Business Administration, states over 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 95% fail within the first five years.
If you look at a sampling of these 2,030,000 search results, you start to see trends in the explanations for why small businesses fail. Common explanations include lack of planning, not enough or not well-expressed marketing, limited capital, inability to differentiate their product or service, inability to delegate, no real understanding of the competition, and an unprofitable business plan. Each of these reasons for failure, are inherently related to or largely associated with a business’s marketing plan and their strategic branding. Is your business at risk?
So what is a savvy horsepreneur to do to survive in this cutthroat world? They can prioritize marketing in their business. That is why I have crafted my signature offering, coined the Brand Clinic. In this series of branding workshops, I hope to address all of the challenges listed above in a comprehensive examination of a business’s marketing identity. I teach equine marketers to reflect deeply on their mission as a business, identify their key differentiators, use tactics to target their ideal clients, and strategically define and hone their brand identity. The Brand Clinic can help support a business through challenging times and establish a vocabulary and framework for successful marketing leadership for years to come. Every business needs to place a high value on having a clear business plan as well as an intelligent marketing plan no matter the scale of the business, or the service or product they provide. From these founding documents can grow every other business decision limiting the business’s risk for failure and ensuring value to the right customers.
